This world will never be what I expected.
And if I don't belong, who would have guessed it?

Elijah listened to her naturally soft-spoken response to his inquiry, a small, knowing smile touching his lips as her tone suggested she didn't derive the utmost pleasure in her occupation. He knew how much she adored her job as a journalist, though many people didn't believe the career suited her rather quiet and organized nature. Ty was different than a lot of people assumed she was from their first impressions. She a had stubborn streak a mile wide, carefully cloaked when the time came to use it with a fooling sweetness. Yes, Tyler knew just how to play it when it came to her job.

"You don't fool me, babe, with all that 'I-don't-like-the-busyness'. You know you love your job. You love how hectic and cumbersome it becomes sometimes." He shot her a cheeky grin, then turned his attention back to road before him as he slid one hand down the side of the wheel to switch on his blinker. Elijah took the turn at 50 miles an hour, not intending to frighten his passenger, just out of habit. More than once he'd been told he had a lead foot and a skilled hand to drive the way he did. How? Like a bat out of hell. Usually he toned it down when Tyler was riding with him.

"Unlike me, who actually hates their job and half-way wishes his boss would drop dead. The stupid man keeps tossing his daughter at my head. It's totally annoying. But I've been promoted to 'head mechanic'. Which is a glorified term for the head honcho's supposed-to-be lacky." He watched from the corner of his eye as the slender woman shifted in her seat so that she faced him instead of the speeding landscape, and he had to suppress a smug grin. He loved being the center of her attention. Meant he could pretend he was the center of her world.

What must be said, We'll say tonight.
Hold your breath, Hold your breath.
Don't let me go.

Tyler sighed, slowly relaxing in the comfort of Lijah's automobile. The engine was almost a soothing noise since she was so used to it now. What she wasn't used to was him speeding off at every start and turning at dangerous speeds. The boy frightened her in more ways then just being alone in a vehicle with her. What really scared her was his uncanny ability to read her like a book. The fact that he knew straight off the bat that she loved her job was a bit odd, but what was more disturbing was the fact that he could understand why she loved it so.

"Okay, okay. So you're right. I do enjoy my job but it doesn't mean I like working all the time." she responded, knowing that she was right this time. Even if Lijah could read her like a book, she wouldn't be worried... When she was telling the truth it was rather apparent. For a moment Tyler laughed, knowing that his boss forcing his daughter open Lijah was going to drive him insane but of course, there was nothing he could do. It was either play along or risk losing his job.

"Just tell her politely that you are taken," Tyler stated matter-of-factly. Before going on any further with her plan she birdwalked right off the topic. "TURN RIGHT!" she yelled, nearly jumping out of her seat. With his driving abilities the turn wouldn't be very difficult, but banging your head all the time did get annoying after a while. Why was she so suddenly wanting him to turn right? Why, to go to her favorite spot in this hell hole of a city. Her and Lijah had been there once or twice in the past, always ended up talking for hours when they did. Then again, who wouldn't talk to hours with someone while laying on the beach of the only lake for miles?

For Tyler, the lake was complete tranquility. At this time of night the moon would be shining down on the lake and the sounds of the city would be long lost. Many times in the past Ty had forced poor Lijah to visit the lake with her and to lay in the blanket that she had oh-so-conviently stashed in his trunk with her. Sometimes she felt as if she bothered the kid too much. Always dragging him with her, or texting him at odd hours of the night... But he was, for the most part, who she wanted to talk to at two am... not like she would ever admit it to herself though.

I see you lyin next to me,
Words I thought I'd never speak,
awake, and unafraid,
asleep, or dead....

I think I love you.

Elijah shot her an apologetic look as they rounded the corner so quickly. Her next words were the truth, he knew, because there were a lot of things her editor wanted her to do that she turned down, simply because she wanted to have a life outside of work. He didn't really think of his understanding as being able to 'read her like a book'. He thought of it as.....well, understanding her.

His boss's daughter wasn't unattractive, not at all. She and Elijah simply didn't click in that fashion. And he would never lead someone on like that and cause such pain when the truth came out. He'd much rather have them unhappy with him for saying no than hating him for lying about it.

"It's not her who doesn't get it. It's her father. The man doesn't know how to give up. I don't think the words, 'I'm not interested in your daughter,' even reach his brain." Lijah sighed exasperatedly, jumping suddenly as her loud words pierced his ears. Hands swerved the wheel expertedly to the right, his hand instinctively pulling up the hand brake so he drifted smoothly around the wide bend that was the right turn he'd been instructed to make.

Ah, the lake road. She wanted to go to her favorite spot, where the water lapped gently on the sandy shore, quiet murmurings the voice of the insects and birds. She didn't know it, but it had come to be one of his favorite places too. Any time spent with her was a moment to treasure, you know? Tyler was always on his mind, and there were very few nights that went by that she didn't text him at 2 in the morning, or a day that she didn't call him and say, 'C'mon, pleaseeee come with me?' He thrived on those early morning/late night exchanges.

A few minutes later, the dark clolored car braked to a stop about twenty feet from the lakeside. Elijah killed the engine, then doused the headlights, and silently opened his car door to unfold his tall frame from the low-slung vehicle. Long strides carried him around the front of the car to stand at the passenger side, one strong hand grasing the handle to open the door for the smaller girl.

This is the way it goes,
with you a part of it.

Nervously saying words,
that oh so tightly fit.

Regardless of whether she would admit it or not Lijah's boss pissed the hell out of Tyler. If he didn't like his daughter then he didn't like his daughter damnit. It wasn't even that she didn't like the girl or the father but rather the fact that the father wouldn't really back off. Tyler would never admit the twinge of jealousy whenever he talked about the subject, nor would she allow it to show either. So to avoid the subject she chose to not respond and to prepare for the sharp right turn.

Inertia pulled her to the left, allowing her shoulder to brush up against Lijah's for a split second. Unfortunately enough, the pull to the left ceased the moment they were heading straight again, allowing Tyler to sit up straight and to reposition her body. The lake was nearby, and once again Ty chose to sit in silence, a comfortable silence. Sometimes it seemed like there weren't very many awkward moments when it came to her and Elijah, but there were always those moments that she had to just stop and mentally walk away from.

It was when they were around friends and locked eyes for a split second too long, or stood a bit too close that she had to do this. She always had someone bickering at her about Elijah, well... for her to pull her head out of her ass and realize that he was there. Truth was was that she was completely aware of him being there, she just refused to admit it; therefore pulling the 'stupid' card. As far as any of her friends were concerned she was oblivious to the chemistry between the two.

Moments after the car had come to a halt, and the lights had been extinguished, leaving the lake in a moonlit glow Ty heard her door being opened for her. It was beginning to seem normal for Lijah to open her car door for her. Tyler, unlike Elijah, had a heck of a lot less body to stand up with. Her five foot two frame got out quickly and got out of the way of the door.

Upon hearing the soft 'click' from the door, for Lijah was too protective of the contraption to slam the door every once in a while, she reached out, grabbing Lijah's hand and pulling him out toward the body of water. It wasn't very large, no it was actually quite small, reaching fifteen feet at the deepest point. During the summer it was nice for swimming, at other times of the year good for other things. Like tonight, perfect for two people to just lay on the dock, which was exactly where Tyler was heading.

Confident that Lijah had taken the hint to follow her Tyler let go of his hand and walked a few paces in front of him. There was absolutely no artificial lighting, no houses lining the shores of the lake. Complete silence aside from Ty's feet crunching along the gravel and soon even that sound becme unaudible due to the gravel turning to sand. For a moment she stopped to pull off the ballet flats and leave them right where she had chosen to take them off.

A moment and a half later she was walking down the narrow dock that opened up to a larger square at the end. First thing she did was take a look over her shoulder at Lijah, making sure that he was still nearby. The wood along the end of the dock was smooth, no splinters to worry about. Within a few seconds Ty found herself laying down in the dock, her feet propped up so that her knees were bent. Her hands rested on her stomach though being Ty she would move around a million times before she was really comfortable. The night was proving to be nicer then she had expected; any night laying on the dock was considered amazing to Tyler.

I can't decide
I never could
But now it seems you never would.

Elijah gently shut the door as she slid from the vehicle's seat, pushing it closed by resting all his weight against the metal of the door. A soft click signalled the successful connection of the latches, then Tyler's smallish hand grasped his own and tugged him with her. After a few steps she released him, taking the lead a few paces ahead.

As the shorter female stopped and slid out of her cutsie shoes, he also paused in his forward motion, and then when she continued on, leaving the foot coverings where they lay, he bent and picked them up. The tiny shoes dangled, one from his index finger and the other from his middle finger, as he followed her onto the dock. The wood was slightly slick with residual moisture, early dew coating it thinly. The lap of the water against the sandy shoreline was a quiet, soothing music in the background of Elijah's conciousness.

The foremost in his mind was the way Tyler looked, laying there on the pier, bathed in moonlight, looking as content as the cat who ate the canary. She always loved coming to this place, though she didn't get the chance to do so very often.

Elijah shook himself out of his reverie and took the last few steps necessary to be beside the pixieish girl. A second later he was laying next to her, knees propped up like hers. He gazed up at the sky for a few long minutes, mind spinning, contemplating, thinking.

Voice quiet and husky, he spoke softly. "Tyler? What do you think about radioactive wastes?"

He twisted his head to look at her, teeth biting the insides of his lips to keep from laughing prematurely.

Sweet dreams that won't come true.
I'd leave it all for you.
Brick walls are closing in.
Let's make a run for it tonight.

Eyes closed, head looking skyward toward the bright open night Tyler couldn't be any more satisfied. The night wasn't too cold, nor was it too warm. As was said in the Three Little Bears by Goldilocks it seemed to be 'just right'. The tall boy layed down next to her with ease, or so it sounded. She breathed in deeply, allowing her lungs to fill to their full capacity before allowing the air to escape through her mouth slowly.

Ty turned over onto her side so that she was facing Lijah. He was, as she just had been, laying on his back, face upturned toward the sky. His eyes held a sort of mischievous twinkle though after he had asked his question. She looked into his eyes for a moment, trying to decipher what the hell he was up to. A small smile passed over her lips the moment she realized he was just messing with her. Ty reached out and hit him in the shoulder just jokingly of course.

"Radioactive waste is a shame, the government should make twinkies or something instead." she replied, not really aware that she had been speaking of twinkies but perfectly aware that she was answering with a bullshit answer. For a moment she looked at him, then turned so that her back was facing him. In one motion she had moved his hand up off of his stomach, holding it with her own, and rested her head on his tummy instead.

Tyler toyed with his hand, moving his fingers around unconsciously realizing it. "What is your opinion about stars?" she asked, looking skyward once more. The stars were bright thanks to the lack of light pollution and the moon was out as well, sheeting the lake in a pale light. Overall the night was beautiful but Tyler found that she was thinking less about the stars and more about Lijah's rhythmic breathing which would lift her head up slightly and fall back down with each breath. The moon was pretty much out of her mind and the stars were as well, they were only in the conversation. How close they were was what was getting to Ty. It seemed like they would always hug or give each other a quick kiss but they wouldn't just lay there and enjoy the moment often.

Tonight was proving to be different then what was normally so.

I thought I could live in your arms
and spend every moment I had with you,
confess all the faith I had in you...

Elijah laughed as the girl smiled and punched him in the shoulder with her tiny fist. The quiet chuckle it had been escalated into full laughter as she responded with Twinkies. He quieted when she looked at him for a long moment then turned so that her back was facing him, a puzzled looking crossing his face as he started to speak. He closed his mouth however when she picked up his hand and layed back down, this time with her head resting on his stomach. He smiled then, staring at the stars still, though his mind couldn't have been further from the celestial bodies at this moment.

"Twinkies, huh? I was thinking more along the lines of....penguins. Penguins are great." His unentangled hand moved to stroke along her hair gently, his digits fiddling with the silken strands fascinatedly. Tyler had his fingers and was gently moving them around, unconciously.

"Stars.... something a lot of people take for granted...something we don't see enough of. And definitely something I should make more time to see. Stars are the perfect romantic setting, I guess...it's a shame to not take advantage of it, to leave it alone and search for restaurants with what they call 'atmosphere'. You can't get much closer to the atmosphere than with stars."

Lijah's hand continued to run through the soft strands of the darling's hair, his knuckles touching her forehead tenderly with each stroking motion of his large appendage. These were the moments he cherised, the ones with Tyler where there were no pretenses, where neither of them denied the attraction they felt. It was just something they took in stride, not letting it ruin their closeness. There were so few of these kinds of moments between them, though...the world seemed to like getting in their way.

"What's yours?"

While the majority of Elijah's mind was focused solely on Tyler and this minute, there was a small, tiny part that nagged him. What about Aiden, the dark-haired guy she'd been really close to before him? He knew the male was back, and that they'd been talking, but.....well, jealousy was eating at him, though he hid it perfectly. With firm thoughts he pushed that part of his mind away for now, choosing to live for right now, for this spectacular moment in time where he could hold Tyler.
